My wife and I decided to do a little early Christmas shopping in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Not that far mind you, but we wanted to visit some specialty stores. I asked to use the Garmin 255W for a change. It is one of Garmin’s newest units and I wanted to put it through its paces. Right away I really appreciated the big screen and the text to speech feature with all of the new roads in that area. We got to our first shopping destination with ease!

The Garmin Nuvi 255W includes top of the line features like optional MSN direct services, Text-to-Speech routing and wide 4.3” display without the big price tag. The display on the Garmin 255W is viewable in any lighting condition that will automatically change to night colors when the sun goes down. With a pedestrian routing mode and a battery that lasts up to 4 hours on a charge, the 255W can guide you along your next walk in an unfamiliar city. Don't worry about not being able to get a satellite signal, Garmin's new Hot Fix technology will keep you locked in with your position. Want to see a picture of your destination? Garmin Connect Photos will allow you to tag your favorite locations with an image and even download images of popular sites with their location from the Garmin Connect website.
The Garmin Nuvi 255 W comes pre-loaded with the Garmin City Navigator data for all of North America, with data provided by Navteq. The preloaded maps also include Digital Elevation Maps which show shaded terrain contours when at zoom levels of 5 miles or higher. The detailed mapping inside Nuvi 255W also includes 6 million Points of Interest including Hotels, Restaurants, ATM’s, Gas Stations and many more. Just use the touch screen to enter in the address or point of interest that you want to navigate to and the Nuvi 255W will provide both vocal and on screen directions to your destination. The Nuvi 255W has Text-to-Speech routing which will clearly announce the name of the street that you are turning on to. The map can be viewed in either 2D overhead or a 3D view of the road ahead. If you miss a turn, don’t worry as it will recalculate directions and get you back on track. The Garmin “Where Am I?” feature will help you locate the closest hospital, police station, gas station, address and intersection to help you assist you in an emergency or to arrive to your destination safely.
The Nuvi 255W is compatible with the MSN Direct receiver. MSN Direct service offers access to Real time information on gas prices, weather conditions, traffic reports to route you around delays and construction, local movie times with ratings and movie genre, news and stock reports, and local event information for sporting events, festivals, and concerts. You also have the ability to plan trips and locate destinations using Windows Live Local on your PC with the ability to wirelessly send this information to the Nuvi 255W. The MSN Direct is currently available in over 100 cities and the information is broadcast over FM frequency directly to the MSN Direct receiver. The Nuvi 255W comes with built-in support for the travel kit which includes a JPEG picture viewer, world clock, currency converter, measurement converter, Automatic switching of time zones and a calculator. Garmin also gave the Nuvi 255W a SD card slot for the storage images. It will also accept the optional International Maps, Garmin Travel Guide and Garmin Language guide from a SD card through on board SD memory card expansion slot.
